Shopping Hell

OK everyone knows I love to shop but even I have limits. We went out on Wednesday at 3pm to get furniture for our new place. We had a list of things and were going to look at a couple places then go to IKEA because we could pick up whatever we couldn’t find. Well we went to one place that had nothing then to Ikea where we spent about 2 1/2 hours (maybe a bit longer) to get the following items: 1 entertainment unit, 1 bedframe, 2 bedside tables, 1 desk that had nothing then to IKEA where we spent about 2 and a half hours, 1 desk chair, 2 area rugs, and a few other small things like dishes ect… By the time we were done it was getting late and we hadn’t eaten and we still needed a couch for the family room. So we went to one more place and found a dining room table & chairs, and a couch for the living room. By then it was 9 past Zoes bedtime and we still had not had dinner. So we still have to find a couch for our family room. Tomorrow we are moving into our new place. We will have a bed to sleep in and a table to eat at at least. It will be fun seeing all of the stuff in our shippment we get both the air and sea shippments tomorrow. I don’t know why we sent anything by air if we weren’t going to get it early. Our furniture will be delivered and hopefully we will be somewhat settled by late afternoon. Then on Sunday we will go out again and look for a couch for the family room. We are going to need more stuff but are going to wait awhile to get it.

We have found an ayi (houskeeper) we like but she lives an hour away so would prefer to live in. There is a room for an ayi in our house so she could and we may do that to see how it goes. That would mean getting more furniture for her room. She worked for an Indian family and learnt how to cook Indian food. She speaks fairly good english and seems keen to learn more. Her birthday is 2 days after mine but she is 3 years younger than me. She had a couple of great references from families she had worked with before. None of the others we interviewed had those. We are also keeping our driver and have him for a year. We are going to keep using the car he has. The company he works for can get us a van or bigger vehicle if we need it.

Well that is all for now we maybe offline for a awhile when we move while we try to figure out how to get all the services like phone, cable, internet ect… set up.

Zoe's latest tricks

Well Zoe is always changing. She now says more words like ball, ohoh, beep and tries to say cracker and pineapple. Pineapple seems to be her favourite food of the moment. She also pinches her index and thumb together and holds them up by her eye and squints when she wants a treat. This is because I had all the junk food in a drawer and held my thumb and index fingers close together and said we would have a little treat. She goes to the drawer now all the time and signs she wants a treat. Of course she is also learning that you don’t always get what you want and she can throw a mean tantrum.

I am sure by the time we are back in December she will be talking more clearly and have more words in her vocabulary. It will be nice for her when we are in our new place and she has her bed back and her toys. Right now she sleeps in her pack and play (or with us mostly with us) and has her naps in the bed. The only way to get her to sleep right now is to lay with her so hopefully she will go back to her old routine of having a nice rock while listening to her story cd then sleeping in her crib.

It looks like we will be moving sometime around the 25th of September. Hopefully My pack that was supposed to be my carry on bag will be in our shippment. It had the camera in it. Then we can take some pictures and post them on the site. I think Zoe may be going on a bit of a growth spurt because she has had a really good appetite for the last week or so. Well that is it for now later.

Few more tidbits from Beijing

Well we have gone to a few resturants none of them Chinese yet. Zoe and I went to Gymboree to check out a music class. She was the only nonasian baby there and it was much like the US except that one of the little girls had her diaper removed half way through the class and nothing replaced it so she had a dress on with nothing under it. Steve had read on the site that kids need the appropriate clothing. Zoe still gets excited when she sees Starbucks here even though they don’t have the soy milk she loves.

Steve is away right now for 4 days on a work retreat. It was supposed to be 6 but her got out of the last 2.

Yesterday I was reminded of the difference often found in manners of children. We were in the playroom at the hotel and a little boy who I would guess was 4 based on his size (Chinese and there with his mom) He was in one of the little tykes cars then got out so Zoe went to use it and he climbed over her while his mom just said be careful and did not instead say you were done it is her turn now. Then Zoe decided she would instead take the balls out of the back pocket area of the car so the boy started backing up trying to run her down again his mom just said and said be careful. The final straw for me was when he had her pinned between the car and the ball pit basically and pushed/hit her hard in the face. She fell back and was crying she would of bashed her head on the hard floor had the ball pit not interuptted her fall. Then his mom came over and said say your sorry but the kid just glared at Zoe and tried to run her over. I picked her up and we left the lady whispered sorry. If Zoe would of done that to a kid half her size or even her own size she would of been the one that had to leave. This lady didn’t make her kid apologize or give him any correction for such bad behaviour. I have found there are many bratty kids here because when people can only have one they tend to get spoiled especially boys. Although this lady spoke good english and may have been from the US or Canada. Luckily we haven’t run into him again. We spend about an hour a day in the playroom just for a change of scenery.

The weather has been hot and humid and often very overcast. You can see a glowing orb in the sky and it is the sun. There is a lot of pollution here and when it is really grey I try not to go outside. The place we are moving is farther out of the city so not as bad. Well I should go now and put Zoe to bed it is 9pm she is still not in a perfect routine yet once we move it should get better.

We found a home

Well we decided on a house yesterday. Our favourite home was in a community that is still underconstruction and only has one or two families living there so far. So we did not go there they also haven’t finished any of the clubhouse amenenities yet. I really wanted somewhere that would be a good place for me and Zoe to socialize and meet others. The place we picked is called Yosemite and is the first place Steve looked at when he came. There was one other community called Lane Bridge we considered but the amenities where not as great. So it is good that we have that settled the unit is just being finished up.We will probably not be able to move for another month or so though because there is a lot of paperwork to be done and negotiating. We are asking for a furniture allowance instead of a furnished unit. The furniture usally comes with the units though some places only furnish one or two rooms. Most have furniture that is too fancy for us. Lots of glass tables and cabinets. I am sure it will be fun shopping for everything we will need. Of course Steve and I only agree on dislikes seldom on furniture we like so it should be an intersting battle.

Here are some things I have noticed here that are odd. One: There is no drinking age so many highschool kids go to the bars and clubs to hang out and drink. Also you can buy beer (no wine) and hard alchol in 7-11(yep there is 7-11) the hard stuff is behind the counter. Two: they aren’t big on refrigeration. The grocery store often has things like milk and eggs on the shelf unrefridgerated. This is the case at the western grocery store too. Although they do have some milk and yougrt in the cold case along with cheese and a few other items.

Well I should go shower now while Zoe is sleeping. Her eye teeth are coming in and she has been a little cranky the past couple days. She was really good the day we were out for over 5 hours house hunting. She has found an Austrailan show on tv here that she likes. I have never caught the name but it has a bear named humphfrie on it. (someone in a costume). They sing a lot and dance and she has started trying to copy the hand movements and dancing.

Hope everyone is well and I will try to post again soon.

Damn this connection

Well a really long post about our housing and activites we have been up to like gymboree with Zoe was lost when my network connection went down before it could be published. So this one will be brief. We looked at housing yesterday and are going again tommorow. Hopefully we will be settled into our new place by the end of September. Our air shippment is here but in customs at the moment. Our sea shippment is still a couple weeks out. I will try to put short updates on here more frequently now that Steve has gotten me a loaner laptop to use. That way I can type while Zoe naps like now.
