Zoe’s well baby check-up

Zoe went to the dr for the first time here. The clinic is very nice and the pediatrican we saw was from the US. She is doing well and her height and weight have stayed just below the 50th percentile. She was not pleased about the flu and japanese ensephalites shots she got. The latter is an illness you can get from mosquitos here. Steve and I should probably go in to see if we need any shots too but it is hard to get motivated when you may end up getting one or more shots.

On another note tonight Steve brought home the power converter for the mac so it is up and running and our dsl connection is now working so there will be more frequent blog updates. That is as long as Zoe continues to cooperate and take her naps in the afternoon that is when I like to try and use the computer. I guess I could post before bed like now but then I tend to stay up to late. It is 10:30 now and I should probably head to bed incase Zoe has a rough night because of her shots. Plus Steve may want to get in here too because I have been hogging the computer to check my forums.

And Happy Thanksgiving. We were going to go for turkey dinner at a place run by a Canadian but because Zoe’s dr appt was at 6pm we couldn’t swing it. Zoe also wanted me to say Happy Birthday to the following family members, Grandma, Grandpa, and Aunty Shelley. Hope everyone enjoyed their turkey and those with birthdays past had good ones and with birthdays coming this month hope you have a good one.

Yashow market

Well today we went to Yashow market and bought some movies we got: The Office Box set, Scanner Darkly, Curious George, The Devil Wears Prada, The Lake House, The Breakup, You Me and Dupree, She’s the Man, Thank you For Smoking, and My Super Ex-Girlfriend all for about $15US. Now before you all order your dvd’s remember they won’t work outside of China so they would do you no good. They also had lots of clothes, jewelry, handicrafts, nail salon, and many other things but it is hard to look around and bargain when Zoe is with you. So I need someone who likes shopping to come on over. We can get foot massages when our feet get tired to rejuvenate then go out again. Maybe I will meet some people here to shop with and will be able to leave Zoe with Steve. Right now Zoe is modeling her sunglasses by putting them on then looking at you with a big smile until you say she is cute. Of course all the clothes are too small for me. I am told there is a market/street called Alien that has clothing that will fit the more curvy foreigner. We will see some day. If not I will be doing some shopping in December. I think this is the longest I have gone without buying clothes for me and Zoe in ages. I have not bought anything since about a week before we moved here. I guess if I don’t shop here I will have the money for when I get home. Except the stuff here would be way cheaper. Zoe is now fighting her Daddy over control of the other laptop. She wants to play her computer game. He has the loaner laptop we have and I am using his work laptop. This one is smaller so easier to carry when we go to the clubhouse to get online. She is playing the game and it is very loud. It is the same one she had on the Mac at home. Hopefully soon Zoe will have a few friends in the neighborhood to play with. I met someone who is going to let me know when the next meeting is for the playgroup she is in. They try to do something once a week either rotating the villa complexes to use the different playrooms or an outing. Apparently it rotated houses but then got too big for that. Her daughter is 3 so a bit older than Zoe. It is too bad our camera is in storage because Zoe is full of cuteness and we would have at least 100 new pictures of her by now. Right now she is dancing while her game plays a video and music.

Almost all unpacked

We are at the clubhouse right now waiting for lunch. We have unpacked almost everything. Early this week we bought a bunch of book shelves at Ikea so we have unpacked all of our books now. We have a lot of them. Zoe’s won’t fit on the shelf so they are going on the shelf in her room. that is where they went before. We bought a baby monitor yesterday so Zoe spent her first night in her room. She had been sleeping in our room in the pack and play. She slept all night from 9pm to 8am. She is very curious. Today we unpacked her potty chair and set it up so she can get used to it. She kept going and sitting on it. So maybe soon we will sit her on it for short periods without a diaper and see how it goes. It is very hot here today probably at least 80F I think that is close to 30C too hot. The 5 minute walk to the clubhouse seemed very long. I am going to the spa here on Friday that will be nice. Steve is going to have some quiet time at the clubhouse with the computer after lunch. Later we are going shopping at a market called Yashow that is supposed to be great for clothes. We will see. Well you have a lot of reading to catch up on so I will end this now.

A bit about Zoe

Well this will be blog number 4 in word because we don’t have our internet hooked up yet. We are going to try to get to the clubhouse later where they are supposed to have wi-fi so we will be able to get the laptop online. We will take turns watching Zoe in the playroom and using the computer.
Well onto Zoe she says elbow quite well and a lot. She also likes to say no now when you ask her to do something or if she wants a nap. At the moment Ferer Jaques (bad spelling) is the song Zoe likes to hear when she is put down to sleep. I usually only have to go through the French and English verses twice and she is out. She likes the French verse better. On bad days I sing it over and over and over. I think the longest is about 10 times. I have tried other songs but that is the one she likes right now. Zoe is also fond of using the broom. Although not good with it because it is way too big for her. I am thinking I will get her a small one. This morning in a room full of toys she was only interested in the broom. If we can get her to use it and the dustpan right we will be set. She is going through a phase where she wants to do everything herself. She gets mad when we don’t let her climb the stairs or go up the ladder to slide in the playroom without us right there to watch her. She will try to push you away. She has been getting lots of practice on the stairs as we have plenty. There are 4 floors and there are 16 stairs to each floor. Not to worry if you come to visit the guest room is on the main level and has its own bathroom. You will have just two stairs from the living room to the level with the kitchen , dining, and guest room. To say hello in Mandarin you say Ni Hao (nee how) Zoe now says how to people when the say ni hao to her and she waves. Yesterday we went to the clubhouse for dinner and she was really fussy and wouldn’t drink her juice she kept wanting a drink but then would push it away. Steve tasted the juice and discovered it was apple cider not apple juice. Later he asked for ketchup for his fries and pointed at bottles he thought were ketchup. The waitress brought some in a little dish and Zoe and Steve dipped fries. Zoe love to dip and will put anything and everything in ketchup. Well suddenly Zoe is crying and grabbing her tounge. It turns out it was chilli sauce and hot not ketchup. I then knocked a glass over and broke it spilling my ice tea across the table. It was quite a hectic dinner and we were surprised Zoe would trust any food or drink we would give her after that.
We know Zoe is growing too because many of the clothes that fit her when we left that came in our shipment are now too small for her. Today we put on her sandals that we just found in a box with books and her toes hung over the ends. She still has a dresser bursting with clothes. But if anyone decides to buy her clothes for Christmas please get them in size 2 or larger. She is in the 18-24 months stuff now and a few things are getting a little small. It really depends on the store they came from. We hope to get a small digital camera soon so we can take pictures and post them so you will all be able to see how much she has changed. Maybe we will even get ambitious and get some video of her and post it so you can hear her say elbow.
Well that is all for now as this is the 4th long blog that will go up once we get online so later.

Rant about the movers

Ok so here is my little rant about the people who packed our stuff. I was annoyed when they did not pack the individual snack size teddy grahams we had bought for Zoe but they said they would go stale. I was annoyed when they did not pack my mini chocolate bars because apparently they would melt and just be a big blob. So imagine my surprise to find a Tupperware container with M&M’s in it that were not melted and a box of crackers that were opened and a box of wheat thins. Now for some reason they also only packed the mint and orange extracts I had for baking apparently the vanilla can’t come. And as far as my spices well there is ginger and a poultry seasoning the basil, oregano, cilantro, and grill mix apparently were able to come. Ok I understood they have rules but either follow them properly or send me my teddy grahams. Also they did send a box of assorted cookies and crackers that are snack size someone else asked us to bring.
Also I said at least a dozen times if it plugs in put it in storage. I know I specifically mentioned the kitchen aide mixer to the head guy at least 3 times. So of course it is here along with every electrical device and gadget except for the baby monitor that was in our room. Which would of been handy because we could of put batteries in it and the one from Zoe’s room (which is here) so she could sleep in her bed. Right now we need to buy one so we hear her when she wakes up. They also sent a ton of things I said were to go to storage like our garage sale items that didn’t sell, all my Disney lithographs (some of which were bent because of how they were packed, the hangers I had in a pile of garbage (they were the ones from Zoe’s clothes), all our vhs tapes. ( I remember telling the guy packing them we weren’t taking them they were going in storage while he was packing them), and many other ridiculous things. I would like to make them come and take the things they weren’t supposed to send and ship them back to the storage. Then they could find the things missing like, Zoe’s dishes, mugs, glasses, and of course my carry on bag along with the pictures I had done of Zoe for everyone just before we left.
Steve said we can go and look in the storage unit when we come back in December to find my carry on bag and our camera. We have no idea what box it is in though because it is not mentioned on the list. They gave us a list with each box and the contents in general for each location. I guess if we had the time to look at it some of this could have been avoided but the day we left the house was a very bad one and really hectic.

Settling In

Well today is Saturday and we still do not have an internet connection. There is a problem with the wiring. The wiring is there but it is just bare wire. The landlady is dropping off a tool for Steve to use so he can set it up. Hopefully sometime soon we will have a connection. I am sure my hotmail box is full of junk mail. Steve, Zoe and Mary (the ayi) just went out to go to Ikea to pick up some shelves for the playroom/library. So I have the whole house to myself for a few hours and it is great. So quiet and peaceful. Mary will be gone until Friday because this week is a national holiday week. Steve will be home so it will give us a chance to reorganize the stuff Mary put away for us and to explore our new neighborhood. I am going to try and get my craft stuff sorted and our closet. Mary does not get that Steve and I want our clothes separate so it is all mixed together. It is very neat and tidy but could be organized to fit more items in the drawers. She went through my underwear and folded them all neatly and arranged them by colour. The same was done with my tshirts they are all folded and stacked so you can see them all in the drawer by colour. I am going to roll them and that way I can fit two layers of shirts in. I am going to ask her not to put the laundry away because I am a bit of a nut when it comes to where it goes. I am sure she will think this is in some way because I think she did a bad job though. She worked from 8am until around 10pm last night. I told her to relax because we were going to be out and watch tv or something. She has done a huge amount of work but I don’t think she can relax.

Last night we went to an event at the clubhouse. It was a bbq and show. The performers were mostly people who live here. The only one we really saw as a band that had 3 teenage boys. They all seemed to be playing a different song. It was really bad. They had some Chinese acrobats too. There was a guy who blew sugar into these neat birds kinda like blown glass. The also had someone doing paper cutting where they make very intricate designs all by hand cutting the paper and someone who made dough figurines that were very detailed. Unfortunately the line to get any of these items was too long and it was hard to see with all the kids and adults crowded around. They had a big moon cake. I will post another blog about the autumn festival and the moon cake later. There is a neat story. We have not eaten moon cake but have gotten plenty of them. We gave some to our driver and Steve gave some to a guy he works with but we still have a big box of them. They have things like lotus paste, bean paste, shrimp paste, and other things in the middle. I am not brave enough to try them. Well this will be the 3rd pretty long blog that will go up when we are online so there will be lots of reading for everyone to catch up on. I will post one soon to about Zoe’s new things to do. One of them is to say No No no no. She is still as cute as ever.

Later Everyone

The move has happened

Well this blog is being typed in word. We spent our first full day in our permanent housing today. The move yesterday was hectic. Zoe was overtired and cranky. Then she napped late and went to bed late. Steve didn’t get home until 10pm because of work. There were problems with the front door not opening once it was locked. They were fixed. Today our Ayi started and she did so much work. She unpacked a huge amount. Even though I said she shouldn’t. I find it easier to put things away myself so I know where they are. She didn’t understand so I am going to have to rearrange the closet because she unpacked mine and Steves clothes and mixed them together. Right now she is carrying Zoe around because she heard Zoe crying. She was crying because she was trying to lift up her stool and couldn’t get it where she wanted to go. Even though she has been told several times the stools stay on the floor. She will often look at you when you tell her to do something with a kind of sideways glance like I hear you but I am not going to listen. The Ayi is going to live in so she will be here 5 days a week then go home to her boyfriends where she was living for the other 2. It is weird having someone living here and I felt bad today when she was unpacking and stuff while I just sat around. I am sure I will get used to it. I did unpack about half a dozen boxes myself today. I have made a big dent in the kitchen with all but one box put away and my craft room. Mary (ayi) unpacked somethings in there and put them away so I need to shuffle some stuff around so I can fit everything in the built in closet. Now once I get my table and chair I will have lots of craft time. I chatted to a couple of people that live in here for a few minutes yesterday they seemed nice. After Zoe and I had lunch at the clubhouse (doesn’t that sound fancy), we went to the playroom where there were 4 other kids all with their ayi’s . The Ayi who spoke the best English asked if I had an ayi. When I said yes she look confused and said you take care of the baby yourself. I said yes and they chatted among themselves and laughed. I guess it is odd to take your own kid to the playroom to them. Zoe and I did have a pretty good day today because I was able to focus on her most of the time. It is weird to have someone calling me misses and asking me what she should do next. She has been here since 9:30am and is still working hard. She didn’t take many breaks or take long for lunch. She is now watching Zoe in the playroom while I type this. Steve will be home soon and we will be going for dinner. I think we will invite her but I don’t know if she will come. They really should give expats a book on protocol for your drivers and ayi’s so you know what is expected and acceptable. I think our ayi will have it pretty good. I don’t care how many hours a day she works as long as I don’t have to clean the house or do the laundry. I have told her she can watch tv anytime she likes and she said no maybe later. We got furniture from Ikea for her and are going to back on Saturday to get a dresser and maybe a desk so she has somewhere to work. She said she wanted to learn better English. Hopefully we like her and she likes us. Mary was born the same year as my sister and her birth date is Nov. 17 so 2 days after mine. Whether or not her being a fellow scorpio will cause tension I guess we will have to see. I don’t believe she has kids yet. She worked for another family in Singapore for 1 and a half years they gave her a great reference. She learned English while working for them and how to cook Indian food. I don’t think she will learn much cooking from me. Well this is turning into a novel instead of a blot. Hopefully we will get on the net soon and I can post it. Or there may be a few long posts.
